Half of world’s countries lack strong early warning systems to save lives in disasters: UN

As the days progress, the climate becomes more extreme. Incidents of natural disasters have also increased in recent years. The United Nations has given alarming information in such a critical situation. According to the World Organization, half of the world’s countries do not have modern tools for disaster forecasting or early warning.

The United Nations released a report on Thursday. There, countries with weak systems for early warning of natural disasters were compared with countries with better systems. It has been found that countries with weak systems have an average of eight times higher death toll from disasters.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said that climate change will cause natural disasters. However, there is no word that they will cause a serious disaster. The United Nations report states that all countries should have early warning systems to prevent disasters.

Fewer than half of the world’s least developed countries have early warning systems in place for multifaceted disasters, the United Nations says. And only one-third of small island developing countries benefit from disaster forecasting systems. Mami Mizutori, head of the United Nations agency UNDRR, which works to reduce the risk of natural disasters, said that the situation must be changed urgently to protect lives, livelihoods and resources.

According to the United Nations report, between 2005 and 2014, an average of 1,147 people out of every 100,000 people were affected by natural disasters. This number has now almost doubled. From 2012 to 2021, 2 thousand 66 people per 1 lakh were victims of disasters.

However, at the same time the number of deaths and disappearances due to disasters has decreased. According to the United Nations, between 2005 and 2014, the number was 1.77 per 1 lakh. On the other hand, from 2012 to 2021, it decreased to zero and 84 people.

Mami Mizutori points to the recent devastating floods in Pakistan while talking about early warning in disasters. One-third of the country was submerged in that flood, killing about 1,700 people. Mizutori said the death toll could have been higher without early warning measures.

Within five years, the United Nations is working to ensure that all countries in the world have an early warning system. The COP-27 climate conference is going to be held in Egypt next November. A plan with warning measures will be presented by the United Nations. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the countries that are least responsible for the climate crisis are paying the highest price for this crisis.
